This Day in U.S. Military History - May 9, 1862

The USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimack) meet in Hampton Roads near Norfolk, Virginia. The Virginia was a ram ironclad made with the hull of the burned out USS Merrimack. The Monitor was the first ship made completely of iron and with a revolving turret. The battle between the two lasted for hours with no fatalities and one casualty (Lt. John L. Worden was in command of the Monitor until he was blinded by shell fragments and gunpowder residue when the Virginia hit the Monitor's pilothouse.)
